The existence of planets around stars other than the Sun has been proposed centuries ago, but the first exoplanets have been discovered only in the nineties. Exoplanet science has since become a major subject in astrophysics, and has interfaces with several other domains, such as physics, chemistry, computer sciences, and biology when considering the possibility to find alien life.

Today, 4000 exoplanets have been evidenced, thanks to more and more powerful observational techniques. I will introduce the various techniques involved, our current knowledge on exoplanet properties and on the way they form and evolve. Finally, I will provide a panorama of the projects for the next decades in this ever growing field of research.

This colloquium is supported by the H2020 EU-funded project STREAMLINE, n° 870313
