Jean-Claude Biasci trained as a mechanical engineer, graduating from the Ecole Nationale d’Ingénieurs de Tarbes in 1982. He started his career at the LAL - Laboratoire de l'accélérateur linéaire, in Orsay, France, specialising in part of the procurement and assembly of the LEP pre-injector sections and the design, procurement and assembly of Hera H1 detector hadronic cells. Jean-Claude joined the ESRF in 1990 as an engineer in the Front-End (FE) group in the Accelerator and Source Division, in charge of the installation of the FEs in the storage ring tunnel. He also designed the Module 1 of the ESRF FEs. In 1998, he was appointed to the position of Group Leader of the Front-End group. In this role, he coordinated the project of installing 6m straight sections, as well as the refurbishment programme of the 28 insertion devices front-ends.

Since 2014 and the beginning of the ESRF upgrade programme phase II, Jean-Claude has played a leading part in the design phase and the coordination of the EBS shutdown as well as managing the assembly of the EBS girders. He was also leader of the mechanical engineering work package (WP3) of the EBS project.   

From 1 September 2019 and for a period of five years, Jean-Claude Biasci will head the Instrumentation Services and Development Division.
